#1.) Identify an ethical situation confronting a company that is currently being discussed or reported on in the media and describe the ethical dilemma:
The ethical situation that I will be discussing throughout this blog is a company that is currently being discussed on the media/news. The company that I will be talking about is Uber. As we know, Uber is very new and popular. This transportation service has many advantages but unfortunately it comes with some disadvantages that are affecting this company as a whole. “The ethical situation that is occurring with Uber is facing several lawsuits and protests all over the world, about this company. Uber has been avoiding its responsibility towards society by neglecting it’s code of conduct and ethical code by participating in unethical practices”. What makes this a serious issue, is that their main goal is to expand and increase its market share and ignore these problems as a whole.
The ethical Issues that are occurring with this transportation service are:
- Passenger Safety- sexual harassment and sexually assault is occurring from the drivers to the passengers
- The security of drivers issues- beating up the driver, misbehaving with the drivers and assaults are happening as well
- Privacy- Uber drivers are being accused of keeping track of their customers locations, from the help of their phones.
The ethical situation pertaining to Uber is mainly focusing on the lack of safety. All three of these categories are a little different but fall under the umbrella of safety.

I really enjoyed reading your first post because I am a huge supporter of Uber. This is a great company to analyze because there are some issues that they have been facing, but there are also a lot of positives that go with Uber too. I use uber all the time and I think they do a great job at making sure that they are hiring the right people. If you think about it, there are some problems that they have ran into with Uber drivers, but think about how many people are actually using Uber. I live in Chicago, and Uber is a must. Taxis are more expensive than Uber and you can only use cash. Although I am talking all good about Uber, they do need to always make sure that their ethical issues are constantly monitored.

Well thanks Madison. I totally agree with you that Uber has many positives and is growing everyday because it is so popular. So many people around the world are using this transportation service because it is so convenient. Some places like Chicago or NYC have a lot of people use them because like what you are saying they are so much cheaper than taxis and its super expensive to have a car up in those big cities over all.

I think this blog is very well written. It gives a general overview of what is being discussed, then hits the specific points of how their situation is facing ethical issues. It is important that these issues are surfaced over the media as Uber has become one of the most popular methods of transportation throughout the United States. Their lack of safety is an issue that should be the company’s main focus, as the entire goal of the company is to get passengers from one destination to another quickly and “safely”.

Thank you. The reason why I chose this company for my blog is because there was so much to write about and also shows a huge ethical dilemma. I totally agree with you that the lack of safety should be Uber’s main focus to make it right in the end for the public and even their reputation.

I was also considering doing a blog on Uber I’m really interested in the main points you brought up as i was not aware of the privacy issues nor the safety issues such as drivers being attacked. I was under the impression that Uber was actively finding solutions to concerns.

I thought doing this blog was so interesting because I use this service all the time when I go out. It was also so interesting to find out new information on a company that I use often. It is actually crazy to see that there are privacy and even safety issues dealing with this company overall.

I personally don’t use Uber so I’m not very connected to this issue. It seems like driver/passenger interactions are the source of the conflict though. I’m not sure how this would be fixed, perhaps by setting clear etiquette standards between the passenger and driver.

Yes Uber has some ethical dilemmas that need to be resolved before they end up losing passengers and even drivers dealing with this company. At the end of my blogs I discuss what Uber should end up doing to resolve these issues to help them try to overcome this.

I am a huge fan of Uber and use it regularly. There are many benefits to Uber, but you are right, there are some drawbacks that need to be addressed. I myself have experienced some situations with Uber drivers that have made me feel unsafe and uncomfortable. And I have also witnessed it the other way around, when other passengers have made the Uber driver uncomfortable. I look forward to reading more about the company’s reactions and solutions to these problems.
